2018 Highlights

Annual General Meeting: We thank Shane Lindsay (2008 to 2017), who had resigned from the board of directors, for his time and effort on the board.

We had eight (8) individuals let their names stand for a three year term on the OTS Board:

Annual General Meeting: We thank Ed Winter (2012 to 2016) and Pat Nugent (2016), who had resigned from the board of directors, for their time and effort on the board.

We had four individuals let their names stand for a three year term on the OTS Board:

  • Trevor Barker with Cameron, a Schlumberger Company, a member for 14 years
  • Cole Needham with Horizon North Camps & Catering, a member for 6 years
  • Gil Benoit with go-led.ca, a member for 19 years
  • Michael Melnick with MHK Insurance Inc., a member for 7 years

Since there were no nominations from the Floor and since the Board was looking at filling four (4) spots, all the nominated were elected to the board.

 

34th Annual Crib Tournament: 54 teams participated in the March 2nd tournament. 

Brian Grandish and George Kosh were the big winners - To find out whom the other winners were go to 2017 Crib Tournament.

Brandon Shier won the Connor McDavid Jersey Raffle.

 

Technical Meeting:  On April 13th, Keynote Speaker Patrick Smyth, VP of Safety& Engineering for Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, spoke on the Economics and Safety of Hydrocarbon Pipelines.  The evening was sponsored by Safety Coordination Services Inc.

 

6th  Annual Memorial Golf Tournament: Wally Kuchar was honored and  Murray Rayner, Don Criss, Harold Gartner, Sandy MacDonald, Dymtro Petruk and Daniel Zimmer were remembered by the 57 individuals that registered in the May 18th tournament held at the Jagare Ridge Golf Course.  The supper, after the tournament at the OTS Park, was prepared by The Canadin Brewhouse.

 

Annual Family Picnic: Due to the great weather, over 150 people showed up for the picnic.  The kids enjoyed the bouncy house, a balloon artist, a tattoo artist and Batman. We were very fortunate to have the following companies sponsor the picnic.

Annual General Meeting:  We were very fortunate to have Brian Jean, leader of the Wild Rose Party,  gave an informative and entertaining presentation.

We thank Kelly Collison (2008 to 2015), Candice Villard (2008 to 2014) and Graham Stanford (2015) who had resigned from the board of directors, for their time and effort on the board.

Annual General Meeting:  We thank Mike Kittlitz (2012 to 2014) who retired from the board of directors for his years of service:

New By-Laws were approved by the membership.  Changes to the By-Laws were required  so that the OTS could qualify for more funding raising alternatives through AGLC and Alberta Lotteries.  The new By-laws are posted on this website. 

Due to the changes in in the By-Laws,  the following directors ran for another 3 year term:

2 time Stanley cup champion, Dave Lumley and former PGA Pro Garry Meyer entertained the crowd with a hot stove style discussion.

Wayne Rimbey of Magnum Cementing won the door prize - a Dave Lumley signed Jersey.

 

32nd Annual Crib Tournament: 74 teams participated in the March 5th tournament.

Memorial Golf Tournament: Don Criss was honored and Daniel Zimmer, Dymtro Petruk, Sandy MacDonald and Harold Gartner were remembered by the 90 individuals that participated in the May 14th tournament held at the Jagare Ridge Golf Course.  The supper, after the tournament at the OTS Park, was prepared by The Canadian Brewhouse.

 

Annual Family Picnic: As usual, we had great weather on May 31st, consequently, over 150 people came out for the picnic.  The children were entertained Spiderman the balloon animal maker and the face painter.  They enjoyed the bouncy castle and obstacle course.

We were fortunate to have Cameron, Alberta Mobile Power Systems, and Solostar sponsor the Family Picnic while Horizon North provided the food, beverages and deserts.

A Calcutta was held the evening before.  Tim Reynar, Rob Boyne and Craig Ferguson were the big winners,  The Calcutta information can be found in Calcutta Results 

A Million Dollar ($1,000,000) Hole-in-One shoot out was held on the 18th hole at the completion of the tournament.  25 individual had a shot winning the $1,000,000, unfortunately no one won.  Dean Berthold was the closest at 20 feet and 7 inches. Collin Spencer was the next closest.

Museum:

  • Lufkin Industries, Inc., Drayton Valley, provided and installed a pump jack at our front gate

  • By taking advantage of the Government's Canada Summer Jobs program we were able to hire two summer students to clean the exhibits and trim the vegetation around the exhibits.

Building:

  • The bathrooms were painted by Jarred, Brett, Angie and Robert Boyne 

  • The caretakers residence was shingled

  • The interior wall beside the stage was repaired

  • The hall roof was repaired

Park:

  • Jarred, Brett and Robert Boyne spent most of their spare time this summer removing trees and shrubs around the museum in the lower level of the park.

Kevin Howard resigned from the board after 5 years of service. The OTS thanks Kevin for his contributions and service over those years.

Two Comedians entertained the attendees after the meeting.

Kevin Tole of Commercial Solutions Inc. won the raffle for the wheelbarrow full of lioquor.

 

31st Annual Crib Tournament: 74 teams participated in the March 6th tournament. Myron Seibold (senior) and Myron Seibold II of NOV were the big winners.

8th Biennial Annual Silent Auction and Seafood Extravaganza: Almost 300 people attended the May 9th event which was catered by Elizabethan Catering Services Ltd.   We thank all the donors of the auction items and the purchaser of the items for making this event a success - almost $15,000 was raised.

4th Annual Memorial Golf Tournament: Harold Gartner was honored and  Sandy MacDonald, Dymtro Petruk and Daniel Zimmer were remembered by the 120 individuals that participated in the May 15th tournament held at the Jagare Ridge Golf Course.  The supper, after the tournament at the OTS Park, was prepared by The Canadin Brewhouse.

Ross Avery one the individual event while the Northwell Oilfield Hauling (09) Inc.team won the team event.  

With the event being sold out in ten (10) days, there were many disappointed individuals who were slow in getting their entries in.

 

Annual Family Picnic: A thunderstorm at noon scared away some people, consequently, only100 people came out for the picnic.  The kids enjoyed the bouncy house, a balloon artist, a tattoo artist and a magician.

Hotdogs and hamburgers were provided by Drilco and Plainsman Mfg. Inc. while Commercial Solutions Inc. loaned us their mobile bar-b-que.

  • James MeadeService Centre Manager of Lufkin Industries, Inc., Drayton Valley  for providing the equipment and manpower (Dave Smestad, Chad Accettura, Jason Pester and Aaron Hughesto assemble the Lufkin pump jack at our front gate and raise the hydraulic pump jack..
  • The Belt Buckle collection donated by Joe Marshall was mounted on the hall ‘s back wall
  • An enclosure was installed over the wooded Cable Tool Rig shed

Building:

  • Alta-Fab Structures Ltd. built a 712 square foot deck on the caretaker’s residence
  • The three televisions donated by Commercial Solutions Inc. were installed and tied to our sound system
  • Horizon North Power Systems relocated the Power Panel that was leftpart of the PTI Kitchen 
  • Interior walls of the hall were painted by Jarred, Brett and Robert Boyne 

Park:

  • Jarred, Brett and Robert Boyne spent most of their spare time this summer removing trees and shrubs around the museum in the lower level of the park.

7th Biennial Tent Party / Bar-B-Que Blowout: Over 1,500 people had a great time at this year's event.  The Best Tent Theme Winner was Halliburton Sperry Drilling, while Absolute Environmental Waste Management Inc. was the Best Food Item Winner.  The Edmonton OTS Executive thanks the Tent Participants for making our event a great success. Christmas Party: A great time was had by the 150 individuals that attended our multi-companiy Christmas party on December 14th.  Unfortunately, it rained that night and it took a little longer to for the cabs and buses to shown up to talke people home.

Museum: Sure Shot Hotshot & Pilot Services Inc. provided the manpower, equipment and material to oil the wooden Cable Tool Rig.

KItchen / Prep Area: The drop ceiling was removed to create a more open feeling.  New lighting was installed. The wall were extended to the ceiling and painted.

Deck: The old deck was replaced with a new 2,225 square foot deck thanks in part to the generous sponsorship from Hi-Tech Seals Inc. and Plainsman Manufacturing Inc.

Floor: The hall floor paint job that was done by Dymtro Petruk in the mid 1990’s was final replaced with a Stontec Epoxy Flooring System.  The following companies helped defray our expenses by purchasing advertising on the floor:

7th Biennial Annual Silent Auction and Seafood Extravaganza: Approximately 200 people attended the May 11th event which was catered by Elizabethan Catering Services Ltd.   We thank all the donors of the auction items and the purchaser of the items for making this event a success – almost $12,000 was raised.

Park Cleanup: The following showed up on May 12th to help clean clean-up our facility:

Memorial Golf Tournament: Daniel Zimmer and Dymtro Petruk were remembered by the 116 individuals that participated in the May 16th tournament held at the Jagare Ridge Golf Course.  The supper, after the tournament at the OTS Park, was prepared by Zambelli’s.

Annual Family Picnic: As usual, we had great weather on May 27th, consequently, over 150 people came out for the picnic.  The kids enjoyed the three jumpy things, the face painter and balloon animal maker.

Mystery Golf Tournament: On June 28th we bussed 54 golfers to the Alberta Springs Golf Resort just outside of Red Deer.  After being short tailgate party beside the driving range, everyone enjoyed great round of golf, followed by a steak supper before heading back to the OTS Park.

42nd Annual Golf Tournament: With the August 15th and 16th tournament being moved to the Northern Bear Golf Club, we changed the format to a shotgun start on both days.

A Calcutta was held the evening before.  Myles Yeager & Monica Wood were the big winners of the,  Other winners included Jeff Breitkreutz, Jacques Rochefort, Timothy Reynar & Rob Boyne

A Million Dollar ($1,000,000) Hole-in-One shoot out was held on the 18th hole at the completion of the tournament.  25 individual had a shot winning the $1,000,000, unfortunately no one won.

Technical Meeting: On September 13th, MNP LLP provided a presentation on how to “Exit Your Business the SMART Way”

NHL Draft Night: Due to the hockey strike, the September 27th NHL Draft Night became a NFL Draft Night.

Technical Meeting: On November 15th,  Hi-Tech Seals Inc. did a presentation on Polymers focusing on Elastomers (history / chemistry / properties / materials)

NFL Thanksgiving Day (Turkey Day) Football: Although the attendance was low, a good time was had by all that attended the November 22nd event.

Christmas Party: A great time was had by the 130 individuals that attended our small companies Christmas party on December 8th.

6th Biennial Tent Party / Bar-B-Que Blowout: Despite the rain and snow, over 1,300 people had a great time at this year's event.  The Best Tent Theme Winner was National Oilwell Varco  / Varco Canada ULC, while Apparel Solutions International was the Best Food Item Winner.  The Edmonton OTS Executive thanks the Tent Participants for making our event a great success. Technical Meeting: We were privileged to hold an Evening with The Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta on October 2nd.  Over 275 people came out for very informative evening,

Fall Classic: The Halloween Party on held on October 30th was enjoyed by all that attended.  Sareen Prasad won the best costume.  The coffin full of booze which was donated by Guy Lefebvre of Fresco Painting was won by Terry Hermann.

Fall Classic: The OTS executive thanks all the individuals who came out to the Oil Time Blowout on October 3rd.

Robert Boyne organized 3 Hockey Nights at the Park  - November 28th, December 14th & February 20th, this winter at the OTS Hall.  This was a new opportunity to utilize the facility, socialize with existing members, and give the facility more visibility to all others.

Annual Family Picnic: We were blessed with great weather for the picnic on June 3rd.  Over 100 children and parents had a great day of fun & laughter and of course food.  The new playground that was installed on the prior weekend was a hit with all the kids.  The day was packed with face painting, balloon animal art and games.

5th Tent Party / Bar-B-Que Blowout: We had over 2,700 people attend this year’s party.  $13,500 was raised from the gate receipts for the Children's Wish Foundation.   An additional $500 was donated to the Children's

Random attendees voted the Southwest Oilfield Products (Alberta) Ltd. booth as having the Best Theme and the Best Food.  PowerComm Inc. came in 2nd and DRS / Rig Products Inc. 3rd in theme.  While MD Totco NOV was 2nd in food and Reliance Industrial Products Ltd. 3rd the best food.

The Edmonton OTS Executive thank the Tent Participants for making our event a great success. The participants did a phenomenal job

37th Annual Golf Tournament: We had 247 people enter, unfortunately, we could only accommodate 216 individuals in the tournament.  The Windermere Golf course was in great shape and we were fortunate to have two of the nicest days in August.  Please check out  Golf Tournament Results and Sponsors.

Some of the big winners were:

  • $8,000 was raised for the CNIB - check out the Edmonton Journal press release.
  • RBC Dominion Securities donated $1,000 and raised another $830 with the raffle at the 3rd hole for the for the Children's Wish Foundation.
  • Scott Toshack won the Titleist Club raffle on Thursday                  
  • Janet Little won the King Cobra Club raffle on Friday
  • Monica Wood won the Thursday Night Skill competition at the Park.
  • Clarence Muzechka, Michael Chyzowski and Gordon Trefananko were the early bird draw winners

Fall Classic: The Casino Night held on September 28th  was good a good time with great food.  The winners of our Casino Draw were:

Fall Technical Meeting:  Over 150 people attended the November 15 presentation given by, Paul Shaw of Halliburton - Sperry Drilling Services.  The presentation was designed to provide the average individual an insight to the aspects of Drilling.    The administrative and support staff that attended found it very informative.

Annual General Meeting: Approximately 200 individuals were treated to excellent food and a fun night at the at the OTS Park on January 12th.  A big thank you to our sponsors Alta-Fab Structures Ltd., Hi-Tech Seals Inc. and Reliance Industrial Products Ltd.

23rd Annual Crib Tournament:  The March 9th tournament was a success.  In order to give people more playing time, a fourth event was created.  To check out all the winners go to Crib Tournament..

4th Biennial Seafood Extravaganza & Silent Auction: The May 13th event was sold out again.  650 people attend the event, raising almost $35,000.  A big thank you to all those that donated items for the auction.  An auction cannot be successful with people bidding on the auction items, thank you for your generosity in your bids.   Please check out the successful bidders and sponsors.

Annual Family Picnic: We had great weather for the June 4th event.  Over100 children and parents had a great day of fun & laughter and of course food.  The day was packed with face painting, balloon animal art and games.

36th Annual Golf Tournament:  After a three-year absence due to renovations on the course, we were back at the Windermere Golf and Country Club for our annual tournament.  With the weather cooperating everyone enjoyed being back at the new and improved Windermere.

Fall Classic:  At the request of the membership, we brought back the Old-Time Turkey Shoot, which was held at the OTS park on Friday, September 30th.  A majority of the 250 people that attended had a successful turkey shoot.  Over 100 turkeys were won

Annual General Meeting:  As usual, January 13th event was a great success.  We thank the following 4 individuals who retired from the board of directors for their years of service:

We were very fortunate to have the following 5 individuals let their names stand for board of directors.

  • Stuart LeVoguer of Unispec Oilfield Inspections

Stuart LeVoguer, Mark Hilton and Rob Boyne were elected to the board.  We would like to thank Peter Ellman and Terry Triska fortheir interest in running for the board and hope that they will consider running again in the future.

22nd Annual Crib Tournament: Julie Ridsdale of Ensign Drilling Inc. and Craig Beggs of Reliance Industrial products Ltd were the big winners at the held on March 3rd tournament.  The Executive passes along a thank you to all of the individuals who took played in tournament.   We especially extend a huge THANK YOU to the event sponsors:

The crib boards were once again supplied by Ja-Co Welding & Consulting Ltd. and Fab-U-Tech Industries

Plastic cups were once again supplied by Hi-Tech Seals Inc.

The board appreciates Communications 2000 Inc. for having 3 of their employees bartender for the evening and the Desk & Derrick Club of Edmonton for providing the 2 cashiers.

Annual Family Picnic:  We were fortunate to have great weather for the June 5th event.  The kids had a great day of fun & laughter and of course food.  The day was packed with face painting, balloon animal art and games.

4th Biennial Tent Party / Bar-B-Que Blowout: Being blessed with great weather, we had over 2,500 people attend. $12,500 was raised from the gate receipts for the Chidren's Wish Foundation.  The Edmonton OTS Executive thanks the Tent Participants for making the event a great success.  The participants did phenomenal job.  We also thank Southgate Pontiac Buick GMC Ltd. and their staff for donating their vehicles and time in providing the shuttle service from the parking lot to park.

35th Annual Golf Tournament: Despite the miserable weather on August 18th, the tournament which was held at the Coloniale Golf & Country Club was a success.  To check out this year's generous Sponsors and Winners go to Golf Tournament under events.

Bob Lee was honoured for his past contributions at the Golf Banquet.

Fall Classic: The September 30th Park Closing featured 3 comedians from The Comedy Factory.  As usual, everyone enjoyed themselves.

Technical Meeting: The November 2nd event had Mr. Harry Zuzak, the Past President of the Royal Canadian Golf Association present a 90 minute session on the Rules of Golf.

In order that we could provide better catering services at our Park, we have partnered with PTI Premium Banquet Services and added a first class catering kitchen to the hall.  The hall is now available year round.

Annual General Meeting:  The highlights of the evening were:

  • The approval of the Replacement Objects and Bylaws.
  • The introduction of Gil Bourgeois, our 2004 President
  • The roasting of our 2003 President, Jim Needham

21st Annual Crib Tournament: 98 teams participated at March 11th tournament.  We thank Capital Oilfield Equipment Inc., Columbia Oilfield Supply Ltd. and Topco Oilsite Products Ltd. for being the event sponsors.  Robert Wall & Chad Whitworth from Global Service Rig were the big winners. 3rd Biennial Seafood Extravaganza and Silent Auction:  The Park Opening – which was held on May 14th was a great success with 550 people attending and raising $17,565.  The OTS Board would like to thank all the Silent Auction Donors for their generous donations.  

34th Annual Golf Tournament:  The tournament was held at the Coloniale Golf & Country Club on August 19 & 20.

Laurence (Larry) MacLean, the OTS treasurer from 1970 to 1994, was honoured for his past contributions at the Golf Banquet.

Fall Classic: The October 1st event was another OTS success.  114 turkeys were won at the various games held during the night.

3rd Biennial BBQ Blow-out:  $9,124.80 was raised for the Children's Wish Foundation.  The Tent Participants did a phenomenal job.  The costumes, tent presentations, and food were great.

33rd Annual Golf Tournament: We had great weather at the Coloniale Golf & Country Club.  A persistent Ray Tweed took home all the money from the closest to the pin competition which was held at the OTS Park on Thursday night.

Park Closing:  A good time was had by everyone that was fortunate to get a ticket to the sold out.
